Speech Therapy

My wife just called and it looks like Baby B is done with speech therapy. When Baby B was first tested about 6 months ago, he tested in the 11 month – 15 month range. Now, he is testing at the 27 – 30 month range.

I am beyond excited, relieved, nervous, but most of all, grateful.  I am grateful for the speech therapy program in our county that helps my son. I’m grateful for the therapists that worked with him and got him to where he is today. I’m grateful for all of the guidance and resources that they provided.

Today marks the end of speech therapy, but the beginning of learning even more.

We met with the speech pathologist last week and Baby B has progressed so much, that they have actually gone from 2 sessions a month to only 1.

Baby B is on average, adding 1 new word a day to his vocabulary. It might not always be very clear what he is saying, but he is definitely talking. Every night, we also sing 4 songs and he is the one that starts saying names and animal sounds for Old McDonald. He is also copying words that his brother is saying too, like, “I Not” and “I Okay”.

So, we are all taking a collective sigh of relief and just grateful for the speech lessons that he has had thus far and that he will continue to have until the end of the year. Then he will be retested and then we find out if he qualifies again or if we have to go to a speech therapist on our own.

It is amazing how even just a little bit of help from speech therapy and the difference that it is making.  Baby B had his 3rd session this past week and the therapist was really pleased with his progress thus far.

In just the past 2 weeks since Baby B’s last speech therapy session, he has said the words “Shoe” when he picks up his shoes, the word “Bear” when he sees a bear on the ipad and “please”. He is also making great eye contact and clapping for himself when he does something after we praise him.  The speech pathologist even mentioned yesterday that he might even be caught up to where he needs to be within 6 months. That being said, I think that that is very ambitious, but still, progress.

God love this kid. He just looks at you and smiles and your heart melts. His brother is into everything, but Baby B, just goes with the flow. Lives life at his own pace.
